Local participation
Working with Snehal, whom I mentioned earlier, we have now put the two projects under one umbrella.
Snehal set up a ning social network for visitors to the area which we hope will be more accessible than the sites Auroville currently provides. It will enable non-Aurovillians to easily publicise their events and other community building activities.
On that site, the directory which donors to Community Forge have sponsored can be reached on the main menu as Aurovillex. Though it looks the same, it is actually a completely different site which I have built, and which we have much more ownership of than the ning. It will be accessible under its own domain name shortly.
We've had some bad luck engaging volunteers to actually collect the data in any quantity, but we have honed the purpose or the project and done a lot of work on the process and usability of data collection. Rather than using passing travellers, Snehal has now engaged some locals, who think the directory is a good idea, and who we are initiating into the project. In order to fund the project after this month, new listees will have the option of paying 50 Rupees (about 1 dollar, or one hour's work) to have their photograph included.
This is a critical moment!
